When it is waterproof vinyl, the answer is yes; it can be installed as a floating floor. These waterproof floors are newer versions of luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) and are the hottest thing on the market today. They have all the style and durability of LVF, but with technologically advanced cores, WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) that won’t peel or ripple ever. While LVF, in itself, is waterproof, these floors offer an even higher level of protection.
What is a floating floor?
The floating floor is a popular choice among homeowners because it is fast, uncomplicated, and, therefore, less expensive to install than some other, more laborious, flooring types.
With these waterproof floors, the pieces click together to mat and then hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue. They are secure because once connected; there is enough tension to hold them firmly in place. An added benefit is that they can be lifted and reused in other rooms.
Some prefer knowing that the pieces are glued, mainly when the floor is located in a very high traffic area. They might have them installed partly as a floating floor; instead of hovering, the pieces are glued to the subfloor. This method makes it difficult, almost impossible, to lift and reuse the pieces.
If it’s so easy, why should a professional do it?
A product can be of the highest quality, but you can end up with misaligned seams, gaps, and squeaks that affect appearance and performance, and longevity if it's not installed correctly. A professional has the knowledge to spot potential problems before they occur and handle them quickly if they do happen. Subfloors are also crucial because if nails, dust, and other debris are present, it can appear on the surface floor. For example, the installer will sometimes sand the subfloor, if needed, to even it out; otherwise, imperfections can travel up to the surface.
