Luxury vinyl flooring comes in planks and tiles that are composed of four layers. It is this combination of materials, along with the unique characteristics of each layer, that makes the flooring durable. Vinyl floors offer a no-fuss, less costly alternative to floors constructed of natural materials. Planks mimic hardwood while tiles imitate stone, ceramic, or hardwood. Family owned and operated Kelly's Carpet Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, offers a large variety of vinyl planks and tiles. We provide design consultation and installation services too.

Core

While any type of vinyl flooring is water-resistant, vinyl planks and tiles that have a WPC or SPC core are waterproof. A wood plastic composite core is created with a wood product like wood flour while a stone plastic composite core contains limestone. A WPC or SPC plank or tile will not warp or buckle even if it is wet for a long period. Since the core structure is not changed by exposure to water, the lifespan of the flooring is not affected. This core layer is protected by a backing layer which also provides cushioning, insulation, and sound reduction.

Wear layer

A thick wear layer guarantees durability since it protects the design layer, or the image of hardwood, ceramic, or stone. This transparent top layer resists scratches and stains as well as other types of damage. Luxury vinyl is thicker than standard vinyl, and digital imaging technology can, therefore, deeply emboss planks and tiles for a realistic look. The wear layer is usually a clear, urethane-based coating that is easy to clean. A 20 mil thickness will adequately protect a floor in a high traffic area of an active household.
