Both are excellent choices for carpeting, but it will come down to your personal preference, that is, how much you value specific characteristics. It's best to discuss your needs in detail with the professionals at our carpet store and look at our samples from brands like Karastan, Mohawk and others.

Where do natural fibers come from?

These are harvested from natural materials, whether plants, minerals, or animals. They're spun into threads and woven into natural carpet fibers, such as wool, silk, cotton, jute, and bamboo. All of these are eco-friendly and durable.

Wool is the most common natural carpet fiber. This floor covering has good resiliency (the ability to bounce back into shape after compression, such as footsteps), is durable, fire retardant, and has excellent soil resistance because of the natural oils that repel dirt. However, it is somewhat absorbent, so stains must be wiped immediately.

What about synthetics?

Synthetics, manufactured, tend to be more stain-resistant and less expensive than their natural counterparts. For this reason, many, especially those with large families, see synthetic as a more practical choice.

Synthetic fibers are usually made through a chemical process. There are four most common synthetics. Nylon, which accounts for about 50 % of all carpets sold, has superior strength, resiliency, and good stain resistance when a protectant is used. This is an excellent choice for ultra-busy rooms with heavy foot traffic, kids, and pets.

Polyester is hydrophobic, meaning that it doesn't absorb. The fiber has superior stain resistance that is inherent. It is best used for rooms with moderate foot traffic with smaller families, i.e., one or two adults without kids and pets.

Olefin (polypropylene) is mainly associated with Berber-style rugs. It is budget-friendly, durable, and has excellent stain resistance. On the other hand, Triexta is relatively new to the market and has already established a reputation for superior strength and permanent stain resistance that's built right into the fiber.
